Metro Bank coming to Whitefriars

Whitefriars’ owners are pleased to confirm that Metro Bank will be coming to the Canterbury shopping centre in the second half of 2017. The deal, along with others in the pipeline, will lead to the creation of dozens of new jobs in the city.

Metro Bank will open its first Canterbury store in a 10,000 sq ft unit on the corner of St George’s Street and Rose Lane. Longstanding occupants C&H Fabrics will relocate to the Waterstones store in St Margaret’s Street, which will consolidate its Canterbury offer at its Rose Lane branch.

Metro Bank launched in 2010, the first new high street bank in the UK in over 100 years. The bank offers unparalleled levels of service and convenience, with stores open seven days a week, and from 8am to 8pm on weekdays. Super-quick account opening is available, with on the spot card printing as well as 24/7 locally-based contact centres.

Metro Bank was recently named Moneywise Most Trusted Financial Provider 2016 and has won numerous other awards for customer service. The bank offers a range of innovative services for retail, business and private banking customers. Even dogs are looked after in-store with fresh water bowls and biscuits!

“We are delighted to welcome Metro Bank to Whitefriars,” said Chris Parfitt, Director of Shopping Centres at TH Real Estate. “This new letting is testament to our ongoing efforts to introduce popular, diverse and innovative brands and services to the centre. Average visit frequency to Whitefriars is at its highest level since 2007, with around a million people passing through the centre every month. Metro Bank will strengthen the existing line-up and broaden Whitefriars’ continuing appeal to its wide-reaching catchment.”

Kevin Walker, Regional Director at Metro Bank said: "We are absolutely delighted to be opening a new store in Canterbury later this year. Metro Bank launched back in 2010 to provide the public with a true banking alternative built around superior levels of service and convenience, and has since grown to 48 stores and over 900,000 customer accounts.

“When we join a new community we invest heavily to provide local residents and businesses with a truly amazing banking experience. This means creating around 25 new career opportunities for local people, bringing crucial support for businesses of all sizes, taking part in and hosting local events and helping to create an energetic retail environment – with our stores open 7 days a week, early until late.

“Canterbury is a vibrant and diverse community that we’re excited to be part of and we look forward to bringing the banking revolution to local people and businesses.”
