New Art Store Brings a Splash of Colour!
A new art shop is hoping to bring a splash of colour to Canterbury. Cowling & Wilcox has opened its first store outside London in the former JJB Sports unit in St George’s Street, opposite Fenwick.
The company opened its first shop in London’s Billingsgate in 1960, specialising in supplies for commercial art and graphics studios. A year later they moved to Soho, attracting many young artists to the area, where they could find a good source of supplies, affordable rents and like-minded people.
Cowling & Wilcox now has branches in central, north, south and east London, as well as a warehouse and head office at Walthamstow.
Guy Cowling, son of the original co-founder, says: “We are not simply an art and graphic supplies shop, but offer a wide range of high quality creative products that appeal to the whole family. We also stock a good selection of cards, gift wrap and books.
“Art students, professional artists and graphic designers, however, remain the mainstay of our business. A key factor in our decision to open a Canterbury store was the proximity of the art college and universities, and we are pleased to offer students a generous 15% off all our products. In addition to the mainstream brands such as Daler Rowney, Letraset, Pantone, Edding and Winsor and Newton, we also offer leading European brands such as Moleskine, Schmincke and Djeco.
One of our best sellers are the beautiful, personalised portfolios manufactured by American company Pina Zangaro. We have always stocked a wide range of presentation books and portfolios. In the sixties we designed and developed the first portfolio case in the UK and since then have always been at the forefront of searching out and stocking the most eye-catching and practical products from around the world, many exclusive to us.”
Cowling & Wilcox are currently offering a range of opening promotions, including substantial savings on top branded products, as well as a free cotton bag when you spend £20 or more in store (subject to availability).
Elham-based Guy adds: “We run regular promotions, so it’s well worth popping in and seeing what we have on offer each week. Our ‘Canvas Madness’ promotion always attracts huge interest, with 75% off our normal prices!”
